Typically, such programs are offered or sponsored by other professional organizations, which are directly related to the practice of psychology (e.g., AMA, NASW, NIMH) and provide formal documentation of continuing education activity. As stated on the ABEC website: “ABEC no longer approves individual continuing education courses and, instead, has adopted a broader Continuing Education Policy…CE events sponsored by PESI can sometimes be an issue. ABEC honors PESI CE’s [if that CE training] is sponsored by [NBCC, CRCC, or NAADAC] and that it is also on the CE certificate…“
* “Acceptable professional development activities for continuing education must reflect provider documentation from one of the following: a. the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. (NBCC) b. the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) c. an approved organization or institution as listed in #2 of this document and must be training in the professional field of counseling as required by ABEC Administrative Rule 255-X-2-.18. 2. In addition to professional development activities with provider documentation from NBCC or CRCC, activities provided and sponsored by (who authorized and/or signed the certificates of completion/verification of attendance) the following organizations or institutions are also acceptable continuing education events: National Association of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselors; American School Counselor Association; State of Alabama Department of Mental Health.
